2010 Big Red Robe (大紅袍, Dà Hóng Páo, "Big Red Robe") - The highly oxidized oolong known as Dà Hóng Páo is the most famous of Wuyi mountain’s yán chá 岩茶 ("Rock Tea"). Known for its complex dark-roasted flavor and brilliant orange infusion, Big Red Robe is one of the most prestigious teas in China with a history dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Its deep, roasted flavor profile makes it popular among coffee enthusiasts- unsurprising considering the complexity of this brew- with a clean bite similar to black tea and a sophisticated fragrance with notes of caramel and cacao. According to legend, Dà Hóng Páo achieved its enduring fame and prestige after the leaves from this ancient Wuyi cultivar were used to cure the mother of a Ming Dynasty royal of a terminal illness. As a show of gratitude, the emperor sent four large robes of red silk to drape around the favored tea bushes, leading to the moniker “Big Red Robe.” Of the original four bushes, three survive, and are said to date back to the Song Dynasty. Leaves from the original bushes are incredibly rare and precious, and can fetch tens of thousands of dollars per pound. Dà Hóng Páo is one of the most highly regarded teas in china, and is representative of dark, twisted Wuyi teas. Our 2010 aged Dà Hóng Páo exhibits a deep mineral mouthfeel with notes of petrichor and hints of citrus. Its flavor is reminiscent of carrot cake, with notes of guō bā 鍋巴 ("the crispy brown rice at the bottom of the pan"), pecan, and brown sugar syrup. This tea comes from He Tian Tea in Xiamen and has been re-roasted multiple times since its original completion.
