2014 Sanmai Shu Pu’er Bing (三麦熟大餅, Sān Mài Shú Dà Bǐng , "Sanmai Ripe Pu'er Cake") - Sha Er is a student of Li Shulin who lives in Sanmai, just across the valley from Nannuo Mountain (Li Shulin's erstwhile home). Like Li, he is from the Akha ethnic group, known as Hani 哈尼族 in Mandarin.
In addition to featuring the hardest possible image on the wrapper, this bing represents the closest thing to the type of aged shu pu'er cakes we would be selling if Li Shulin's house hadn't burned down in 2021. Like Li, Sha Er practices 生态农业 shengtai nongye "Ecological farming", a farming philosophy that involves minimal interference with the natural growth of the tea plants. His processing and small-pile fermentation methods are also based on Li's techniques. This 2014 bing shows what small-pile ecological tea like Li Shulin's tastes like after more than a decade.
Of course this is its own tea, made by a different person (Sha Er), grown in a different place (Sanmai). This cake has a more woody character than Nannuo Mountain's mineral-forward profile, with more bass notes than the sweet, bright shu pu'er from Man Le.
