Unsmoked Xiao Zhong (無燻小種, Wú Xūn Xiǎo Zhǒng, "No Smoke Little Type") This is the unsmoked, slightly higher-grade version of Zhengshan Xiaozhong. It is sourced from the same producer of our smoked Xiaozhong, Chen Shuiman, whose family has grown and smoked tea in Tongmuguan, Fujian for generations.

Zhengshan Xiaozhong is known in the West as Lapsang Souchoung. In addition to being the first and oldest red tea, it is distinctive for being smoked, and has a cult following among a particular segment of tea drinkers. Outside of that niche, the intense smokey character of this tea can be overwhelming for many people, including most Chinese people.

This unsmoked Xiaozhong is made from the same plants that are used to produce the classic smoked version, but with a slightly higher grade of leaves picked earlier in the spring. It showcases the exquisite character of the Tongmuguan Xiaozhong plants, which enjoy the pristine environment of Tongmuguan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is strictly protected.

One of the finest red teas we carry, and a teahouse favorite, this tea is great for fans of the smoked Xiaozhong to experience the leaves in a different way, as well as those who don't like smoke but enjoy good tea.
