Su Mao Feng (素毛峰, Sù Máo Fēng, “Plain Hairy Peak”) is ubiquitous in Sichuan’s capital city of Chengdu. It is enjoyed in homes, offices, and in Chengdu’s dozens of riverside open-air tea houses, where it is second on the tea menu after Zhú Yè Qīng. Visiting friends or relatives are usually served the more expensive Zhú Yè Qīng, but locals prefer to drink Sù Máo Fēng for its full, robust flavor and bright green liquor. It is made of the leaves and buds of the E’mei tea plants, and the downy appearance of the white buds against the green leaves gives it its name. Its flavor is rich, sweet, and grassy with a soft floral fragrance and luminous emerald infusion.

    Bang for the buck

Not necessarily a mind-blowing tea, but this green does the trick. It’s subtle in flavor, with soft, grassy, smooth taste and a pleasant vegetal aroma. This is a daily driver at a great price.

One Of The Best No Surprises Tea I’ve Had

Posted by Ivy on Sep 3rd 2024

If you like floral green teas, this one is for you most likely. It is almost archetypal how much this tea meets but doesn’t exceed expectation. If this were the green tea I knew growing up, I never would have stopped drinking tea! It is pleasant but had a bit of bitterness that wasn’t awful like you get when steeping a green too hot (the kind that made me believe I didn’t like green tea), so I can see why people love this one! Just isn’t for me I don’t think.

    Su Mao Feng

Early steeps are sweet and subtle and later steeps can be made full and robust. One of my favorite Green Teas ever.

    Workhorse Green Tea

This tea really hits the spot: lovely color, smell and taste. It’s a great every day green tea that punches above its price tag. The Qi is also energizing without being overwhelming.

    Smooth intensity

In fragrance this tea shows florar and sweet pastry notes in a balanced way. In a hot gaiwan the most dominant notes were lilac and chimney cake. After the rinse, an umami rich vegetal broth came to my mind. The first infusions gave very elegant smooth brews with vegetable and milk notes in it’s taste. In later infusions I noticed a sort of mineraltity and significant sweetness. In the last infusion, It is worth overbrewing to get a strong astringent refreshing kick which definietly wakes you up.

A staple go to green tea

Posted by Jason Bratcher on Jan 25th 2023

I never consider teas to be a “ Beginner” tea. IMO it does an injustice to the power and presence of teas that are fine quality but not as pricey. Having stated that, if you are looking to introduce yourself to the universe of Green Tea and brewing in the gong fu cha style, this one is a good place to start. A nice flavor with a bright finish on the palate. Steeps well but keep that water temp down on this one. 185-190degrees for a few seconds and you will not be disappointed.

    Jungle Soup

Jungle soup, humid forest grass, drop of lemon juice; jungle hermitage, warm rain. Full-bodied, beautifully simple.
