Big Black Buddha Stank (佛香紅茶, Fú Xiāng Hóngchá, "Buddha Fragrance Red Tea") This colorfully-named tea is a straightened, sun-dried Nannuo Mountain red tea produced from the Buddha Fragrance cultivar. This is the same tea that is used to produce Buddha Fragrance sheng pu er as well as Red Tara. Buddha Fragrance is a pu er cultivar selected for its prolific downy buds, resulting in an exceptionally sweet and fragrant oxidized tea.
Big Black Buddha Stank (our name for this) differs from its sister Red Tara in that it has undergone the Li Tiao process, which straightens the leaves. Not only does this highlight the prolific golden buds of the tea and create a beautiful appearance, it also gives the tea a maltier, sweeter taste.
This is an exceptionally red tea - the color and character of the liquor both typify redness. The fragrance of the leaves has leather and wood notes, with sweet highlights of dark fruit. The liquor carries those dark fruit fragrances as well as having a distinctive sweetness reminiscent of redwood in the sun and floral notes approaching the rose end of the spectrum.
